Today a classmate asked me an intriguing question: after more than half a year at university, why has the frequency and indispensability of the PC in daily life turned out to be far smaller than imagined, while smartphones and tablets command vastly greater screentime?

The primary reason is this: smartphones and tablets are devices predominantly engineered for consumption and input; the personal computer, by contrast, with its formidable computing horsepower and physical bulk, is predominantly engineered for output and content creation. Coupled with the recent mushrooming of ChatGPT—evolving from conversational models to autonomous code synthesis—I sense an eerie premonition that human productivity is being incrementally and comprehensively supplanted by AI. Moving forward, the general utility of the PC may steadily contract, relegating it to increasingly hyper-specialized domains.

The eventual consequence of AI’s inexorable advance across diverse disciplines may mirror what happened to Go, where human fortresses fell one by one. In the end, will human society not plunge into a third form of despotism? If governmental tyranny constitutes the first authoritarian despotism described by Orwell, and the fast-paced, shallow escapism of TikTok short videos constitutes the so-called second despotism, then Artificial Intelligence represents an insidious, far more consequential third despotism. It invisibly alienates human beings into mere functional instruments, rendering rebellion virtually impossible.

Roughly five or six years ago, following AlphaGo’s defeat of Ke Jie, open-source and proprietary AIs surfaced across the globe, subjecting human Go masters to a dimensional-reduction crushing blow. Back then, most amateur enthusiasts leaned toward optimism, believing AI had expanded our horizons, elevating human imagination and tactical creativity. Yet professional players held an entirely different perspective: they sensed that AI had already established the solitary, immaculate answer—manifesting in the guise of God, where winning required nothing less than absolute subservience to its verdict. Over recent years, a genius like Ke Jie has wrestled unceasingly with the existential meaning of his identity as a player, waging a desperate insurgency against the extinction of human agency, yearning to play “Go as played by mortals.” The results are there for all to see: his competitive performance over the past two years has plummeted catastrophically.

Learning to coexist with AI: this may well be the single most critical capability demanded of the post-AI era. Indeed, AI supplanting humanity appears no longer an unfathomable, distant horizon. Take Gemini: in some respects, its abilities already eclipses 80% of human software engineers—and that is merely a standalone application. In the future, humans may no longer be needed as kindergarten teachers, for AI never suffers fatigue and delivers relentlessly efficient, bespoke pedagogies. Nevertheless, the scenarios depicted in the film M3GAN inevitably stoke our dread; the dystopian future envisioned by James Wan may not be entirely implausible.

Our generation, born into the economic dividend era of a rising China, can be considered the most fortunate cohort in history. Yet during secondary school, we experienced three grueling years of the pandemic, an ordeal that fractured the geopolitical landscape. Our university years now coincide with economic contraction and the breakneck ascendancy of artificial intelligence. In the days to come, we must contend not only with our fellow human beings, but spar against the intellect of synthetic machines.

I remain deeply fascinated by the disciplines we study—those cutting-edge, future-oriented domains: medicine, finance, artificial intelligence, electronics and information, frontier physics, materials science, and beyond. Reading books, for me today, has become a form of respite, an escape hatch from the din of worldly reality.

Yet we always seem fixated on past occurrences, fretting endlessly over future trajectories. Let us not forget that what is infinitely more precious is an active, unflinching embrace of the present. Pure and fearless as a snow sprite, unburdened by worldly decorum like an innocent child—only thus can we locate our true coordinates within this dizzyingly volatile world.
