Living as a stranger in a new city feels like casting off an established social identity to start an entirely new life, exploring urban topography with a sensation both magical and intoxicatingly free. Time and again, I felt that no city possessed enough gravitational pull to anchor me; only the bruising friction of each wrenching farewell made me feel my body plummet from high above the urban skyline into the concrete canyons below. Yet after meeting them, everything changed.

Upon entering college, I abruptly realized that for the first eighteen years of life, one essentially needed only to manage academic performance; other subcultural pursuits could be freely harvested without the leash of societal censure. But once inside university, I truly tasted the colossal gravity and institutional power of the mainstream—I was now required to shoulder genuine existential accountability.

At university, I frequently felt as though I lived like a cold knife, a sharp blade, or some equally rigid and pointed object. Yet my tender friends could always catch me, wrapping their warmth around my jagged edges. Again and again, they helped guide me out of internal friction, granting me a teetering, precious equilibrium.

What I revere most in my friends is that practically none are tethered to dogma. They possess the rare courage to refuse to march with the jostling herds along that broad, gilded highway—they fiercely prize their own independent thoughts, light as three copper pennies. Their restless, nascent philosophies brush against one another, crackling and sparking into incandescent embers of dreams, ideals, wild fantasies, reveries, and sweet daydreams.

I adore their earnestness and warmth. Diverse trajectories sculpt their unique appraisals of life and society. An excess of joy blurs the memory of the episode itself; the ecstatic experience is so profound, yet feels like a sliver of waking truth pressed between the pages of a dream.

“Joyful in life, joyful in death, with wine forever brimming in our cups.”

There is a crack in everything; that’s how the light gets in. And my friends are immaculate perfection, for they themselves are the light.
