The first time the two of us spoke was already sometime in mid-to-late September. I timidly asked him, “Are you from Shengze too?” And just like that, three years of friendship as fellow Shengze residents—inside and outside the school bus—began.
我是一个不折不扣的书呆子(从初中到高中一直是)。初一的时候据说我在校车上大谈历史，引得大家纷纷侧目，zy由是认识到了我。我第一次见到他有些吃惊，好像在哪里见到他。后来才知道，他是盛小另一个校区的，一二年级还未分校区时，我们兴许还见过面。因为我们同时有着几个好朋友，校车上谈起，不禁笑叹盛泽之小！
I am a complete bookworm, and always have been from middle school through high school. In seventh grade, I apparently spent a school-bus ride talking at length about history, attracting strange looks from everyone around me. That was how zy first became aware of me. The first time I saw him, I was a little surprised because he seemed vaguely familiar. Only later did I learn that he had attended another campus of Shengze Primary School. Before the school was divided into separate campuses in first and second grade, perhaps we had even met. Since we also happened to share several friends, whenever we talked about them on the school bus we could not help laughing at how small Shengze really was.
进一步了解后，对他的印象也不只停留在古铜色的外表了，他真的很令人佩服。第一是他家财万贯，他所认的人和团体，无不是我们当时这个年龄最新奇和高级的，如机器人、数码产品、欧美音乐等。可以说，zy为我打开了一扇新世界的大门。
After getting to know him better, my impression of him naturally extended far beyond his bronze-colored complexion. He was genuinely impressive. First, his family was extremely wealthy. The people, communities, and things he knew about were invariably the newest and most sophisticated things imaginable to us at that age: robotics, digital products, Western pop music, and so on. It is fair to say that zy opened the door to a new world for me.
过去，我幼稚地以为，成绩高者就更聪明、更应受到尊敬，看到这样的他后，我才深深意识到我的错误。他的情商极高，谈吐举止得体，外表干净帅气，体育优秀，兴趣面广，这么多优点无不令我羡艳无比。这些得天独厚的优势能让他今后的人生中所走的道路更宽阔！
In the past, I had childishly assumed that people with better grades were necessarily more intelligent and more worthy of respect. After meeting him, I deeply realized how wrong I had been. He had extremely high emotional intelligence, spoke and behaved appropriately, looked clean and handsome, excelled at sports, and had broad interests. I envied all these advantages enormously. Such exceptional strengths would surely open far more paths for him in his future life.
在这里，感谢他三年多以来对我这个书呆子的照顾，特别是校车上！！现在回想起来，真是又感激又羞愧！
Here I would like to thank him for taking care of this bookworm for more than three years—especially on the school bus!! Looking back now, I feel both grateful and embarrassed.
这种朋友，交两三个便一生无憾了！
If you can make two or three friends like this in your lifetime, you can have no regrets.
今天是zy十六岁生日，权以此文作贺生日礼。
Today is zy’s sixteenth birthday. I offer this piece as a birthday gift.
