Another year, another fine autumn moon, yet those who gaze upon it are no longer quite the same. On the night of the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, I looked up from the street at the moon I had not seen for a long time. Compared with before, this full moon seemed colder, yet somewhere within that coldness it also gave me a trace of warmth.

Reading the Mid-Autumn moon poems of the ancients, I encounter Nalan Xingde’s line: “Looking upon such a fine night amid sorrow, one knows it will all turn into choking grief.” It flows into my heart like a sobbing stream. At sixteen, I struggle with my pen in the vast battlefield of ambition and reputation. The world gradually places heavy responsibilities upon my shoulders. “Study for the rise of China!” Whether consciously or unconsciously, generation after generation of young people is swept forward by the current of its age, sometimes forgetting to stop and think.

From ancient times to the present, society’s ideals have shifted from “establish yourself and help others establish themselves,” and “cultivate yourself, regulate the family, govern the state, and bring peace to the world,” to today’s “study for the rise of China.” The Confucian ideal of active engagement with society has influenced China for thousands of years. Fan Zhongyan, Zhuge Liang, Zeng Guofan, and others used their own efforts to cast the positive side of Confucianism across the world like sunlight. The moon, meanwhile, is concealed by the brilliance of the sun. Thus, Kuafu chasing the sun represents effort and courage, while Chang’e flying to the moon represents deception and escape.

Society seems to have forgotten the moon. I walk anxiously through the street, frightened by the sight before me. The streets are illuminated as brightly as daytime, while restaurants proclaim themselves “Cities That Never Sleep” in enormous characters. Everywhere I look, citizens without exception clutch glowing smartphones, sighing in frustration over tiny amounts of money in digital red envelopes. People hurriedly forward hollow messages saying “Happy Mid-Autumn Festival,” never forgetting to attach exaggerated emojis. In reality, they are obsessed with all the moon’s projections in the human world, yet have forgotten the true bright moon hanging in the sky. Regardless of whether it was truly created to commemorate Chang’e, the Mid-Autumn Festival will always remain an invention demonstrating the remarkable foresight of the ancients.

The sages looked upon ordinary people of antiquity, generation after generation confined to agricultural labor, rising with the sun and resting when it set, with no time to appreciate the watery radiance of the moon. “When we meet, let us simply empty a cup of wine; without words, all joy and sorrow is told.” People leave their houses and gently touch the scarred and cratered surface of the moon, where they see reflected their own hearts, weathered by the affairs of the world. The radiance of the moon can drive away society’s noise and allow people to gain new insight through contemplation. Listen to poets gazing at the moon: From the childish innocence of— “When I was young, I did not know the moon,
and called it a white jade plate,”

to the leisure of— “Clear radiance rests upon water and trees,
rippling gently through the windows,” to the melancholy of— “Last night the wind blew, yet no one understood;
tonight the clear light is just as in years past,” then to the acceptance of— “People have sorrow and joy, partings and reunions;
the moon has brightness and darkness, waxing and waning,” and finally to the detached laughter of— “Long accustomed to watching autumn moons and spring winds.” The cool moonlight always reveals the state of mind of the person gazing upon it. Somehow, when I think of the word “reunion,” affection for my family rises within me, filling my heart with warmth.

Tomorrow, the sun will rise as usual. The tragedies and comedies of the human world will continue. Without a word, the moon will pour its radiance into every corner of the earth. And at the beginning of this new cycle, everyone will preserve within their heart a hard-won trace of warmth.
