Another Year of Rain at the Humble Administrator’s Garden
一 Part I
In early autumn, a fine drizzle drifted ceaselessly; days of unbroken rain washed out the sky and diluted my zest for sightseeing. Yet standing before the weathered, time-honored gates of the Humble Administrator’s Garden, I could not help stepping forward into the rain.
Entering the garden, I was greeted by a broad expanse of “wild green stretching near, blending with the blue sky afar,” dotted with crystalline water drops that shone all the brighter beneath the hazy sky. Beside the clear, open water stood the simple, serene Waterside Pavilion; its quiet, old-world atmosphere immediately inspired admiration. The pond flowed silently, bearing the prosperity of both the past and the present. Across the water were winding corridors and scattered pavilions, still full of fresh vitality today. Following the blue-gray flagstones, I bent down and caught the fragrance of green water plants. I could not help lingering for a long time, my thoughts drifting beyond my surroundings.
二 Part II
Following the flagstones, admiring calligraphies and paintings by masters of past dynasties, my mind was washed into expansive breadth. Just then, at the end of the stone steps, I casually caught sight of a startling ruin: beneath the boughs lay scattered petals torn down by rain—“Morning rain cleared, where are the traces? A pond of shattered duckweed.” Beholding such desolation, my heart lacked Su Shi’s detachment of “mourning not the fallen bloom.” These petals had long forfeited the splendor they wore on the branches, torn and heartbreaking to look upon. O autumn rain, since you nourish all living things, why must you cast down “two parts dust”?
A gust whipped past; I instinctively reached out to grasp a few petals, but in an instant they vanished without trace. Wandering aimlessly along the boundless path, facing this exquisite scenery with a bleak smile, infinite melancholy welled within. These blossoms appeared radiant, yet in truth were mere transient guests of this world. And are not mortals the same? The spirited youth I am today will also one day be discarded by time like these flowers. “Heaven and earth are the tavern of all things.” Li Bai truly captured it.
三 Part III
Walking with head bowed, I arrived unawares at the Listening-to-Rain Pavilion—the master’s most cherished retreat, where eyes savor misty vistas and ears drink the murmuring rain. Before the pavilion lay a pond of limpid water planted with lotus, fringed by scattered clusters of verdant bamboo and broad plantains. “Time readily abandons man—reddening cherries, greening plantains.” Such was Jiang Jie’s lament a millennium ago. Standing where the ancient master once stood, listening to the plinking rain before the pavilion, a familiar sensation crossed the river of history to flood my heart. It was Wang Xianchen’s love and yearning for nature, transcending the centuries to commune with me.
Listening quietly to the rain, I surveyed the grounds with fresh eyes: while the rain dashed petals to the earth, it could never wash away the essence of Wang Xianchen’s soul; though time claimed him, it bequeathed to us the magnificent Humble Administrator’s Garden. Across five millennia of Chinese history, who has turned to forgotten dust in the tomb, and who has achieved immortality in historical annals? It all hinges on what enduring treasures they bequeathed to posterity! Thus it is said: the flower withers, but her fragrance is remembered; the man has passed, but his spirit endures forever!
四 Part IV
Through a rift in the rain, a beam of sunlight broke through, bathing the stone carvings and calligraphy behind in shimmering radiance. I gazed back for a long time, then stepped through the gates with a joyous heart. Ahead, guided by sunlight, a brand-new scroll was gently unfurling before me.
Behind me, the drizzle resumed its soft patter. Amidst misty rain the garden stood timeless, much like the ancient city of Gusu that embraces it—gazing with detached serenity upon the joys and sorrows of generation after generation.
Behind Ordinary Trifles: Stories of Virtue Around Me
The ancients said: “Do not fail to do good because it seems small; do not do evil because it seems petty.” Virtue is a power, and even more, a treasure. A person of moral character earns praise, respect, and trust. In contemporary society, countless individuals remain earnest and grounded. They carry forward the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation; their deeds illuminate this world like a beacon in the boundless night, guiding my path forward.
Once, while walking down the street, I saw a middle-aged man smoking by the roadside. His face looked fierce, and his sly eyes scanned the passing crowd like those of a ravenous wolf. A beautiful young woman then approached, wearing designer brands from head to toe. The man grew covetous at the sight. As she reached him, he lunged forward, snatched the bag from her shoulder, and prepared to run away with nimble steps. Several strong young men passing by saw the thief and hurried after him. Realizing that things were going against him, the thief ran a few quick steps but was still caught. People took him to the police station, while those on the street gathered around the men who had bravely intervened and kept praising them.
When the woman offered a reward, they waved their hands in unison, smiled, and walked away… Though not an earth-shattering event, their spirit is worthy of emulation and promotion.
“A man’s life is finite, but serving the people is infinite; I wish to devote my finite life to the infinite cause of serving the people.” Surely no one is unfamiliar with these words. The spirit of Lei Feng sweeps across our hearts like a spring breeze, sowing seeds of selfless devotion, mutual assistance, and civic grace.
The cleaner in our residential complex embodies a willingness to give. Every day, when the sky is just beginning to brighten, the repeated “swish, swish, swish” of his sweeping wakes the sleeping neighborhood. In every season, in wind or rain, he appears as punctually as a clock in every corner of the city, cleaning our residential complex thoroughly. His hair is gray-white, and his wrinkled face bears the desolation of the passing years. The hands gripping his broom are thick and short, looking like a bent iron rake—perhaps because of years of work. He greets everyone warmly, his smile so simple and contented… Looking at his dark skin and somewhat tired figure, I feel gratitude well up within me.
The quiet beauty he brings into my heart imparts lasting warmth.
The ancients said: “Lush green bamboos are all the Dharma body; radiant yellow chrysanthemums are nothing but Prajñā.” As long as one observes with heart, virtues in life are legion. I resolve to make my humble contribution toward carrying forward traditional Chinese virtues and Huaxia civilization. I shall observe every detail of daily life with care, striving to become an upright, virtuous youth.
Celebrating the New Year
When I begin a five-hour journey home, when people set off fireworks at night, and when relatives and friends visit our home, I realize—the New Year has arrived.
While gathered with family around the feast, enveloped in warmth and bliss, have you ever noticed the solitary, helpless elders living nearby?
“Grandma, I’m here!” My mother and I brought fruit to an old house that seemed somewhat forlorn.
This elderly lady had lived entirely alone for fifteen years…
The elderly lady gazed at the photograph on the wall, gradually lowered her head, and looked toward the sound of our voices: “Oh! You’ve come! Sit down, sit down.”
“Keep Grandma company for a while; I’ll go and cook,” Mom said, patting my shoulder.
My eyes fell upon Grandma’s hands; she seemed to be clutching something tightly.
Before I could ask, she unfolded her palm—it was a photograph. “Alas, fifteen years… fifteen years already!”
It was a black-and-white photograph that seemed somewhat blurred with the passage of time. All these years, ever since we learned that this elderly lady lived alone, my mother and I had visited her, but she kept looking at the photograph on the wall and weeping…
“The food is ready!” Mom called, poking her head out of the kitchen.
I gently guided Grandma to the dining table.
Gazing at the plate of scrambled eggs with tomatoes, she picked up a slice of tomato. Her hand trembled, and when she looked up, I saw two streams of tears.
“She… she used to love my scrambled eggs with tomatoes most… Back then I was swamped with work, with no time to care for her; now when I long to be with her, it’s… impossible. Boo-hoo…” Grandma broke down completely, gingerly withdrawing the photo from her pocket.
I looked closely: it was the same as the photograph on the wall. Taken many years earlier, it was the only photograph of her with her daughter—and also the last.
It was said that fifteen years earlier, after her daughter had spent the New Year with her, there had been no further news of her. The village head had even asked others to look for the daughter, but there was not a single lead. Everyone had no choice but to give up.
“Fifteen years I’ve waited here. I… I believe she will return, she will come back…” Grandma wept over the picture.
Tears sprang to my eyes as well, profoundly moved by this unyielding familial devotion.
I began looking back over these thirteen years: my parents had raised me, yet not only had I failed to repay them, I had complained that they had no time to spend with me and that their way of bringing me up was flawed.
The Spring Festival is meant for reunion, joy, and warmth. Yet so many fail to care for their parents and elders. What they yearn for is not wired money or parcels of clothes from afar—what they crave is your presence. Furthermore, please spend time with solitary elders around you; they are starved of love. With the New Year upon us, give them love, and grant them a blessed holiday!
