Palms Dusted with Moonlit Feathers
“A single flower does not make spring; a hundred flowers blossoming in unison fill the garden with spring.” Throughout the history of world table tennis, China has consistently fostered the prosperity of the global arena with an inclusive, open-hearted posture, while boldly riding the crest to stand at the pinnacle of the world. Clearly, shouldering responsibility, harboring self-confidence, and fostering mutual advancement are the inexhaustible wellsprings of upward progress for both individuals and nations.
The epoch and the individual self form a unity of opposites. The epoch provides a vast stage for personal development, while the realization of individual selves propels the progress of the epoch. Chinese table tennis never shrank from fear of challenge; by proactively contributing to the sport’s development in other nations, it did not decline because of competition, but rather opened up vastly broader horizons for both Chinese and global table tennis. Such magnanimity radiates China’s spirited posture of shouldering responsibility and striving forward in our time.
Behind the courage to shoulder responsibility shines the brilliance of self-confidence. As Li Qingzhao penned: “Why need it be pale green or deep crimson? It is naturally first-rate among flowers.” This was the osmanthus flower’s quiet confidence in its own essence. Encouraging foreign rivals to compete with China is the domestic table tennis community’s profound affirmation of its own heritage and depth. Robin Li once said: “We welcome more ‘Baidus’ in the market to compete with us, for only then can Baidu’s full potential be unleashed.” Therefore, as the youth of a new era, we too should harbor self-confidence and embrace responsibility within this grand epoch, orchestrating a life that marches resolutely onward.
Some cannot help but fret: fierce competition inevitably brings elimination, so what should one do when caught in the dilemma of defeat? In truth, as Bertrand Russell observed, diversity and variety constitute the true channel of personal and societal progress.
Once the kingdom of Go, Japan grew complacent after dominating the world, stifling the growth of young players with its rigid senior-challenge system, until finally overtaken by China and South Korea. Conversely, courier Chai Shanshan, armed with confidence and daring to compete, walked into the Great Hall of the People to deliberate on state affairs. Competition is by no means the meaningless friction of “involution”; rather, through mutual stimulation, it helps the “hundred flowers” bloom across the garden. Resonating in unison and sharing honor and woe, both individuals and the nation ascend steadily upward.
Crucially, competition predicated on mutual progress is neither a battlefield where each side fights to the death nor an excuse to retreat passively into one’s private garret. We are neither soldiers nor head-in-the-sand ostriches; we are “two kapok blossoms on a single bough, exchanging the most precious warmth and cheer amidst early spring’s chill.” Your true triumph lies in constantly shattering your own shackles. Growing through defeat and victory, brimming with confidence yet daring to bear burdens—that is the most precious essence of competition.
“Who has not heard the clear cry of the moon? Whose palms have never been dusted with moonlit feathers?” On youth’s dream-seeking path, may we cherish the moonlight of competition above our heads and share the rich fragrance of growth.
Crossing the Razor’s Edge, Striding into the Future
“The razor’s edge is sharp and difficult to cross. As the ancients said, few succeed in crossing it.”
These opening lines from W. Somerset Maugham’s The Razor’s Edge set the premise. In the novel, the male protagonist, dissatisfied with being a stock-market employee, chooses to pursue the self he loves through meditation and mountain climbing; meanwhile, his fiancée Isabel clings to the public view of “us,” sparking fierce contention. The protagonist and his fiancée symbolize the two poles along life’s journey—holding fast to the “I” versus conforming to “us.” Only by removing the imbalance between them along the razor’s edge can one cross it and stride into the future.
There are thousands of “us.” In The Post-Truth Era, one realizes modern humans paste labels upon themselves to fit into collective categories for external validation. Looking around today, how many youths leap hastily into surging crowds before discerning their own value and purpose, hoping the tidal wave of “us” will propel their solitary skiff? As Pascal’s “thinking reed,” bending haphazardly with every passing breeze, one will scarcely find the true conduit of self-actualization beneath the vast canopy.
Better to first heed the self! Like Calvino’s Cosimo, escaping regimented family life to live in the treetops and listen to his own inner voice. Just as Lu Xun abandoned medicine for literature, wielding his mighty pen to engrave the soul of the Chinese people; Darwin left theology to study evolution; and Cheng Kaijia decisively shifted from mathematics to research on China’s “Two Bombs, One Satellite” program. All these luminaries commenced from the “I,” soaring triumphantly across history’s starry sky.
Yet on the journey of pursuing the “I,” we must continually listen to the voice of “us.” Much like the “absolute chill” in Fernando Pessoa’s The Book of Disquiet, no insurmountable chasm exists between the “I” and “us.” Buffeted by individualistic tides, we must harmonize the significance of the collective. The value of an individual is ultimately recognized within the community of “us”; in this sense, Isabel’s path remains not without instructive value today.
Photographer Zhou Xiangyang measured ten thousand villages in southwest China with his own feet, awakening public awareness for left-behind children through vivid photographs of them; Chen Beier abandoned the concrete jungle of the metropolis to film the many facets of life among mountains, rivers, and zip-lines. They are brave souls walking toward the self amidst murky fog, upright in conduct and illuminating the future. The fundamental aim of cultivating the self is not eccentric posturing, but rather becoming the backbone of the epoch with elevated poise, striding toward a brighter dawn.
Some cannot help asking: “The protagonist Larry did not clearly transcend the razor’s edge—if those who pass over are truly few, must one persist?” Pondering quietly, I believe the courage to step onto that knife edge already embodies heroic grace, transcending success or failure. Had Gauguin never found fame, would his artistic toil have been worthless? Far from it. Much like the runner in Lu Xun’s prose who crosses the finish line even in defeat, though bearing sorrow in their hearts, their every stride radiates the fire of life. From the instant they step onto the track, they are victors—the very backbone of China striding toward tomorrow.
The epoch calls, demanding resonance and shared destiny. We must neither lose ourselves within the tide of “us,” nor linger idly among “scenery in the trees.” We must balance upon the razor’s edge between the individual and the collective, neither arrogant in triumph nor despondent in defeat, marching into the future. As Huolawo said at his journey’s end:
“Ahead lies light!”
Rome Is No Longer in Rome
“Aesthetic education and intellectual education are the two most essential dimensions of human cultivation,” so proclaimed ancient Greek philosophers. Aesthetic education, the vibrant foundation of youth development, faces unprecedented trials in modernity. Yet if beauty is a natural posture rooted inherently in the human heart, whence comes this so-called “trial”?
Aesthetic education is not merely “gymnastics of the soul” or “a mirror,” nor simply what Zhu Guangqian described as “the projection of the aesthetic object upon the subject.” It is, above all, a posture of life—a conscious devotion to crafting one’s spiritual sanctuary. Opening ancient verses, from Wang Xizhi’s effortless grace in “gathering at the Orchid Pavilion in late spring” to Su Shi’s serene joy of “strumming the zither for a kindred ear,” all reflect the harmonious beauty of humans resonating in profound unison with nature.
Constellations shift and epochs change. Modern stimuli are stark and direct, devouring pristine sensibilities; the vibrant undertone of aesthetic education seems faded under the barrage of fast-paced existence. “Seemingly ordinary, yet most wondrous; appearing effortless, yet born of grueling toil.” When Wang Xizhi’s masterwork degenerates into a credentialing tool for diplomas, and Su Dongpo’s beloved zither notes fade into mere background music for exam certifications, we cannot help asking: whither is aesthetic education heading, and can it find a living conduit?
Hermann Hesse noted: “The purpose of art is not the mastery of a technique, but helping us discover the meaning of life.” Vincent van Gogh spent much of his days confined to a hospital ward, yet etched his blazing strokes across the world with piercing vision and incandescent hues. Reflecting upon myself, I too practiced an instrument every day, but in the end it became little more than a way to make a living. Donning a utilitarian lens, I quantified every movement into grades and test scores. Art is like the carriage or boat in Xunzi’s Encouraging Learning; but if the ultimate destination is lost, all that remains is barren chaff.
Fortunately, the warmth of aesthetic heritage passed down through generations still lingers. That pristine, unadorned, authentic beauty—transcending professional elitism—is our sole sanctuary in this aesthetic wasteland. In Record of the Sick Plum Pavilion, Gong Zizhen lamented that “people under heaven admire crooked, leaning, and sparse plum blossoms while ignoring their natural posture, and so bent and broke them in March.” Those numb from self-exploitation in pursuit of swift success should remember Confucius’ admonition: “The noble person is not a mere utensil.”
Overemphasizing utilitarianism in art only deprives and fractures our living experience. Only the ceaseless nourishment of lucid beauty can revive aesthetic sensibility within souls exhausted by the rat race, enabling them to flourish as autonomous individuals endowed with aesthetic discernment.
Martin Heidegger bequeathed an enduring question: “In the era of a technological, homogenized world civilization, does humanity still have a homeland?” Though white clouds morph into grey dogs thousands of times over, this beauty alone endures unchanged. The infinite spiritual home within human aesthetic education stands as the ultimate answer to this query.
Rome is no longer in Rome. The stance toward Western tradition in Romain Rolland’s Jean-Christophe mirrors our attitude toward aesthetic education. Integrating beauty into modernity, identity, and everyday life, beneath a thousand rivers reflecting the moon, the spirit of beauty shall return for all eternity.
Each Wave Surpasses the Last: Dedicated to the Elder Generation
Respected Elders: Greetings to you all! It is a distinct joy to receive your ardent expectations on this May Fourth Youth Day. I firmly believe the encouragement from the “front waves” infuses our “rear waves” with even greater momentum to forge ahead.
Karl Marx observed that the driving impulse of historical development is paving the path for the next generation. Let us rewind forty years: China was embarking on Reform and Opening-up, with countless tasks awaiting renewal. The founding generation carved out an unprecedented horizon for you, and today, you have bestowed upon our “rear waves” the precious power of choice.
Therefore, you need not envy our world; rather, you should take profound pride in your contributions. I hope that when I too become a “front wave,” I will prove worthy of the wondrous world you have bequeathed to us!
Granted, voices lamenting that “each generation is worse than the last” have never vanished over the decades; they often see only the comforts enjoyed by the “rear waves” while overlooking our struggles. Yet I bear them no grievance, for they too surely anticipate that we will achieve more and do better. Indeed, this world has granted us greater rights and opportunities, and we ought naturally to shoulder greater responsibilities.
Thus, during this epidemic, we stepped forward without hesitation. Du Fujia, Du Fuguo’s younger sister, served among the first cohort of nurses deployed to Wuhan, declaring firmly: “My brother performed heroic deeds for nation and people; I cannot lag behind!” Such is the responsibility of the “rear waves.” Alongside her, countless researchers and even delivery couriers fought steadfastly on the front lines of the epidemic response.
“So long as you still have the power to do something for others, you must never stand idly by.” These words by Romain Rolland should be engraved upon the heart of every young person.
Yet beyond the glittering crests featured in promotional videos, the vast surge of “rear waves” consists mostly of supporting columns—ordinary mortals like myself. Among my classmates, some excel in photography, some write compelling prose, and some are gifted speakers. When they unite, they can create another Back Wave; and when millions converge, the rear waves will swell into a monumental surge, unleashing mighty power toward the dawn.
Admittedly, we are born ordinary, yet that does not prevent us from radiating brilliance. “Be an ordinary person, live ordinary days, and savor the most flavorful life.” Yu Qiuyu’s words spur us toward our aspirations.
Please entrust this world to the “rear waves”! You will witness with satisfaction: the higher and fiercer the waves surge behind us, the brighter and more prosperous the China built before our eyes will become!
Thank you, everyone!
Dialogue Over Confrontation: Interdependence Manifests Wisdom
In The Origins of Totalitarianism, Hannah Arendt depicted individuals in modern society as “atomized beings.” Their isolation alienated interpersonal bonds, plunging society into a zero-sum game of callous confrontation. Yet under economic globalization, neither individuals nor nation-states can remain isolated islands. Only by melting the hard ice of confrontation with the water of dialogue can we ride the grand tides of our epoch in mutual interdependence.
“Five colors shine together to enhance one another; the eight categories of instruments play in harmony to achieve peace.” Confrontation and dialogue stem from our longing for an ideal echo; they are not the finale of an epoch, but cadences in a turning melody. Consider the Goose Lake Debate a millennium ago: Master Zhu Xi and Master Lu Jiuyuan held differing philosophies, yet listened humbly to each other. After five days and nights of intense debate, Zhu Xi praised Lu’s reasoning and assimilated elements of Lu’s philosophy of mind to enrich his own doctrine, cementing his status as a Confucian master. By contrast, North American hegemony today walls off nations, trying to string together Benthamism and erecting an invisible Berlin Wall between NATO and Russia through unilateralism.
Little do they realize that under confrontation there are no victors; only by surveying the world through the vision of universal solidarity can we cultivate greater harmony under the same sky.
To be sure, while we advocate against drawing the sword of confrontation amidst once-in-a-century transformations, neither should we dismiss conflict as fleeting scenery outside a train window. As old and new ideas clash, covert tensions are inevitable. If we wish to chart a path through life’s disputes, we must mature through divergent struggles. Facing conservative obstinacy, Wang Anshi resolved to “act after weighing righteousness, repenting nothing because what is right is clear,” standing boldly at the forefront of confrontation to fulfill a storied life; Dostoevsky confronted the clashes of guilt, retribution, and redemption in Crime and Punishment. We do not present ourselves aggressively, yet we possess the courage to confront confrontation.
As with individuals, so with nations. Amidst the pandemic winter, a volatile world, wilderness, and jungle, more than a hundred participating nations appeared as snowflakes on the Winter Olympic cauldron. “Through integration comes connection; through connection comes establishment”: exchange and mutual learning increased understanding, while win-win cooperation deepened the idea of community. Confucius stated: “The noble person seeks harmony without uniformity; the petty person seeks uniformity without harmony.” China embraces its responsibility to aid the world, building international consensus through equitable dialogue.
“A brother is born for adversity.” Beneath pandemic clouds, China and South Korea exchanged supplies under the motto “The Way does not distance people; people make no strange lands,” exemplifying profound wisdom in dialogue and overcoming hardships together.
Using dialogue as steps to ascend, we reconcile myriad differences amidst tumultuous currents. May youth and nation stride forward arm in arm; the grand wisdom of a “Community with a Shared Future for Mankind” shall nourish the earth and illuminate all corners under a thousand moonlit streams.
