The Fandomization of Go: The Zhan Ying Phenomenon
Zhan Ying is a Chinese professional Go player who exploded into viral fame late last year. Today she stands among the top five live streamers on Bilibili, with nightly live-stream turnover reaching hundreds of thousands of yuan. Her streaming demeanor is notoriously “absurdist”—not an engineered gimmick, but a manifestation of her unvarnished, bizarre innocence. The dissonance born of this purity drives her magnetic charm, drawing audiences who watch for amusement and viewers from VTuber circles into the Go orbit.
Consequently, hostility within Go comment sections has surged visibly. I detest the importation of celebrity fandom culture into Go because their foundational premises are fundamentally irreconcilable. Idol fandom requires low barriers to entry and pluralistic aesthetics: anyone can voice an opinion, everyone can latch onto a bias, inevitably fueling toxic internecine factionalism. Go is the antithesis: intellectually formidable, devoid of the fast-consumption qualities demanded by internet virality, and refractory to idol idolatry. Above all, Go’s eternal axiom is absolute: victory is the only currency. Regardless of stature, charisma, or persona, what ultimately matters is the player’s performance on the board.
Now Zhan Ying has ushered a deluge of newcomers into the Go world, the overwhelming majority possessing zero fundamental comprehension of the game. Their engagement is rooted not in evaluating moves, but in parasocial fantasies: they dogmatically assume their favored idol must prevail; upon defeat, rather than parsing tactical substance, they fixate on AI win-rate graphs and launch vitriolic abuse—yet do they even comprehend AI evaluations? The resulting paradox is acute: while Go trends online, serious dialogue analyzing actual games has dwindled.
Recently, a Sino-Korean World Go Championship final unfolded in Chongqing, hosted by China. China’s fifth-ranked pro was swept 0-2 by Korea’s third-ranked player. Defeat itself is unremarkable; terrifying was the public reaction. Commentators first attacked China’s No. 5, then hurled vitriol up the domestic ranking ladder, Ke Jie predictably catching vicious flak. Next, cynical conspiracists insinuated Chinese pros had cheated their way into the finals, then pivoted to excoriate the national training apparatus and the association, ultimately culminating in xenophobic slurs against Koreans. I cannot fathom why every modern topic must be conflated with nationalist politics, particularly when so many spew venom without an ounce of independent thought.
My assessment stands: among China’s 1.4 billion populace, countless seem fixated on state politics, yet over 95% merely use it as an opportunity to vent emotions. Of the remaining 5%, only a fraction holds tangible stakes in policy, and those capable of influencing outcomes are infinitesimal. South Korea exhibits symmetrical pathologies—mindless internet abuse targeting Yuqi on Korean forums is rampant. Far better to appreciate stage performances and study Go moves in peace.
Another bitterly ironic spectacle: in physical encounters with foreigners, domestic citizens are unfailingly polite, deferential, and cordial; yet behind keyboards, they instantly resort to pejoratives like “Yankee,” “Little Japs,” or “Gao-li sticks.”
The Women’s World Cup Debacle & the Chinese Sports System
This match was a psychological demolition. Heralded beforehand as the glorious “Steel Roses,” every position was systematically torn apart; our lone penalty goal was gifted by the opponent, feeling like a dimensional strike courtesy of the dual-vector foil in The Three-Body Problem. Physical conditioning provides no alibi—northern Chinese women are hardly short, yet standing beside English athletes, they were dwarfed by half a head.
What revolts me further is the double standard in public discourse: atrocious play warrants unsparing criticism, yet media incessantly parrot the “Steel Rose spirit,” sugarcoating humiliation as “glorious defeat,” dragging the men’s squad into the mud as scapegoats while boasting that “the women are still superior to the men”—the epitome of Ah Q’s psychological victories. In truth, most commentators never watch matches and remain oblivious to the tactical catastrophe exposed on the pitch. Incessantly canonizing this mythos to dizzying heights only ensures a harder slap in the face.
The prestige of the “Asian Cup Championship” requires sober demystification: the Asia-Pacific confederation commands six World Cup berths, yet only five nations maintain genuine professional infrastructure—most countries invest zero resources into women’s soccer. FIFA rankings clarify the reality: China ranks 14th (1,854 points), yet across the global top 36, Asia fields merely four nations (China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam), with zero representation inside the top ten (Source: FIFA Women’s World Rankings). The smug self-congratulation over winning the Asian Cup last year was utterly baseless.
The root rot resides in developmental infrastructure. Unlike Go, which thrives on solitary genius plus brutal training regimens, football demands a comprehensive, institutionalized ecosystem. China’s youth academy system is dismal—growing up in a new first-tier metropolis, I never encountered a single scouting trial for football, basketball, or volleyball. Contrast this with Europe and the United States, where primary and secondary athletics curricula are rigorously packed; in China, a physical education period escaping cancellation by math, Chinese, or English teachers counts as a miracle. At the close of the last century, China’s women took World Cup silver; today, Western methodologies evolve continuously while we stagnate, deservedly crashing out in the group stage.
Ultimately, China has never mounted robust, market-driven athletic revitalizations. Our strengths lie in esoteric Olympic events where “a cohort of promising youths can be locked in an enclave for three to five years to produce medals”; whenever a discipline achieves high commercialization, our podium hopes evaporate—such is the state-sponsored athletic machine (Juguo Tizhi). Consider South Korea: between 2013 and 2018, over 80% of world Go titles were claimed by China; the Korean National Assembly responded by passing the Baduk Promotion Act in 2019. Over the subsequent two years, Korea outpaced China dramatically across elite cultivation, grassroots youth development, and commercial operations. At a Chinese Go tournament, spectators may not even know when it will end—something that could not happen in Korea.
Until the state-sponsored sports apparatus undergoes systemic reform, I believe meaningful change will be difficult.
The Cruelty of Competitive Sports
Watching Korean Go player Shin Jin-seo bury his face in his hands, this was the moment in my life I most yearned to embrace Shin. I felt an urge to grab both Nicole and Shin by the scruff of their fates, pulling them together to share warmth, whispering to set sorrow aside and look solely forward—the grief was unbearable. With five days of team matches looming, I will likely go mad; whether they lose their minds as well, I cannot say.
A self-confession the following day: it is precisely the merciless cruelty of competitive athletics that draws my devotion, meaning every drop of anguish suffered as a spectator is my just desert. Who can triumph indefinitely? History bears no such god—even a titan like Lee Chang-ho could not sustain invincibility, let alone those who follow.
Reflecting on the Korean series D.P.: this series about military deserters is fascinating, worthy of winning both the Baeksang Arts Awards’ television prize and the Blue Dragon Series Awards’ television prize.
It defies imagination how deeply fractured South Korean society has become—bullying has become part of its social culture. Abuse within the armed forces is particularly unhinged, largely indicting universal conscription: this work must be based on voluntary participation to preserve operational efficacy. A line from the drama echoes with profound moral weight: when it comes to bullying, every silent bystander shoulders equal culpability with the perpetrator.
Though Chinese society wrestles with its own myriad ailments, I would never wish to live in South Korea—the college entrance examination, chaebols, mandatory military service, systemic bullying—the suffocating weight is simply overwhelming.
Reflections of a Haifei Cup Referee
To earn work-study income, from September 30 to October 2, 2023, I served as a referee for the Shandong Provincial Go Championship (Youth Division) held in Weihai. My verdict after a single day: I was dispatched not to arbitrate victory and defeat, but to work as a babysitter—my mental state completely collapsed.
Four Chaotic Phenomena
First: Abysmal technical caliber. Today’s 3-dan and 4-dan competitors exhibit appalling tactical comprehension, appearing entirely untrained, able to dominate games merely by knowing the basic rules—and these represent mid-tier contenders; I played with vastly superior sophistication in second grade.
Second: Complete disregard for rules. One child played two consecutive stones without waiting for the opponent (an immediate forfeit in formal Go); another holding White sat in the Black seat, demanding a rematch upon defeat because “I was supposed to play White”—Playing Black or White is entirely equivalent under the rules, yet with such atrocious skill, they dreamed of reversing destiny by swapping colors. Utterly devoid of shame.
Third: Outright score tampering. This tournament utilized smartphone camera apps to count territory, the most impartial method available; manual hand-counting was reserved for contested boards. I counted a board at 183 stones, declaring a loss; the child threw a tantrum, insisting the software was defective and demanding manual counting—the second count yielded 186 stones, declaring him victor. In all likelihood, amid the commotion, he took advantage of the commotion to put three black stones from the table back onto the board. More fundamentally: their skill is so pathetic that they cannot even gauge whether they have won or lost.
Fourth: Incompetence of referees. On another board, the scoring app legitimately glitched, incorrectly scoring a narrow Black victory as a defeat; astoundingly, neither the wronged child nor the erroneous victor objected, both poised to sign the score sheet—it was I who noticed the erroneous ruling from nearby, after which another referee finally realized the problem. Those arbiters possess zero Go literacy, armed merely with an app to officiate. Youth tournaments may well require babysitter-style stewards, but botching the very outcome of a match is inexcusable. My summary today: “Referees do not know Go; referees are not required to know Go.”
Parents and the “Child Immunity Clause”
Parents are equally intolerable: utterly ignorant of the game yet aggressive in interference. One child lost by half a point; after I counted twice, the parent barged in, accusing me of “displacing stones”—I am the referee, why would I tamper with your child’s stones? Do I not know the heartbreak of a half-point defeat? Had I not lost by half a point in my last championship match, I would have been runner-up in all of Suzhou. That is the nature of competitive fairness; if you distrust basic integrity, hire someone else to officiate.
As for the platitude “don’t hold children to adult standards,” I reject it wholesale: why was I capable of rigorous discipline when I was a child? Being a child is not an imperial pardon, nor a license to desecrate the rules. Intellectual laziness, cheating, defying regulations—the venue was overflowing with it.
Past vs. Present
In our era, provincial championships demanded a strict 5-dan prerequisite, screened through municipal and district qualifiers with capped quotas; today, any individual can sign up, debasing the title of a “provincial championship.”
The gold standard of rank certificates has plummeted beyond comparison. Back then, 3-dan marked a major milestone, signifying an established, idiosyncratic playing style; 5-dan was a formidable summit, denoting a complete game devoid of structural vulnerabilities—both were arduously earned. My personal promotion trajectory: 1-dan in autumn of first grade, 2-dan in spring, 3-dan in second grade, 4-dan in third grade, and 5-dan in fourth grade. My question is simple: how many players in this arena could match my second-grade 3-dan caliber? Yet today’s 3-dans and 4-dans cannot even deduce their own win-loss standing.
Attitudes toward play have also deteriorated in lockstep: allotted ninety minutes of game clock, they finish carelessly in fifteen to twenty minutes, standing up oblivious to who claimed the board.
结语 Coda
Go is a gentleman’s game; do not bring underhanded tactics into it—that is how certain people conduct sports competitions and has nothing to do with Go. My ideal of Go mirrors the Hangzhou Asian Games arena unfolding right now: seated upright with solemn decorum, greeting one another politely and making friends, producing masterly games, and holding sacred the rules, the contest, and one another. The Go before my eyes was this so-called Shandong provincial tournament in Weihai.
Two oaths sworn in fury (archived verbatim): “I will never deal with children again, nor accept any work involving them.” “Differences among adults stem from conflicting worldviews; differences between adults and children stem from whether a worldview exists at all.”
Aftermath thirty minutes later: Work-study money is bitter coin. Today’s paramount epiphany—how infinitely precious it is to converse with souls who embody logic, courtesy, restraint, reason, and humanistic sensibility. It had been so long since I encountered such grace that my entire worldview felt inverted today.
