Section 03
The Agony of Military Training
I still recall middle school military training, and it felt a little like Stockholm syndrome, actually tearing up when our drill instructor departed. In high school, I merely found the instructors amicable enough, nothing more. But in university, I harbored pure, unmitigated loathing for the whole lot of them.
By the afternoon of Day 4 (out of a nine-day regime), a final sorting was conducted: roughly 30% were routed into other specialized drills, while 70% were assigned to enemy-capturing combat boxing. I figured boxing carried a semblance of vitality whereas the specialized drills looked terribly rigid, so I stayed put with the boxers. Come the morning of Day 5, the company commander realized during roll call that they had an excess of 30 to 40 cadets. He ordered each drill sergeant to purge the surplus from their units and dump them into the “Stragglers’ Company”—originally established for the sick and frail, but now repurposed to absorb castoffs. Incredibly, I was banished to this unit on the pretext of being “too tall”…
Day 5 was undeniably relaxing. But on Day 6, the sergeant who had been overseeing our unit was transferred, replaced by a sullen, slouching instructor demoted to our Stragglers’ Company. Fully aware that this exile resulted from his own indolence, he ordered me to lead the drills. Because our company was barred from the final parade, he would receive zero official commendation or performance merit, making him the bottom-ranked instructor among his peers. Seething with resentment, he weaponized his petty authority to torment us blameless students.
His signature line barked: “You lot don’t have to perform in the final parade, and you expect training to be easier than boxing?” With that, he forced us to hold planks and pump pushups on scorching, rocky ground under the blazing sun. Another gem followed: “Many of you think the Stragglers’ Company is a haven for slackers, eh? I’m going to make you train harder than anyone else!” Inwardly, I raged: You were the ones who forced me into this unit, and now you say that I wanted to come here myself. Denied participation in the parade, which stripped away performance bonus points, I was rewarded with the only all-day physical training at the entire university under the sweltering sun.
By the evening of Day 7, pushed past my limit, I marched straight up to the deputy company commander, declaring my desire to box and demonstrating a set of boxing movements. Seeing that I was sincere, he approved my transfer back. Those two agonizing days in the Stragglers’ Company instilled in me a visceral contempt for that instructor—a brutal slap in the face at the very threshold of my university journey.
Reflecting on it now, our original female instructor—who falsely claimed our military training marks were tied to postgraduate recommendation quotas—was just as duplicitous. People who disregard students and obsess strictly over their personal promotions are scarcely better than that petty tyrant in the Stragglers’ Company. Right upon matriculation, I discovered that university life is largely a ramshackle circus; military training delivered that lesson in unvarnished detail, laying bare how individuals embrace refined egoism to scramble up the ladder. This reality is likely intertwined with the difficulty of the local Gaokao and the region’s strong Confucian traditions.
