Section 09
September: Eighteen · Sword’s Whispers
2021 Back to Fortuitous Gold Nuggets
In the morning, the first sunlight of being eighteen falls upon my body. Happy birthday to me.
This year has been bustling and tumultuous, the so-called rainy season of youth seeming to pour down for an entire season at once; yet sunlight outside the room filters down through heavy clouds—beckoning toward turning tides and rising from the ashes.
A writer once said: “Do not defend darkness simply because you have grown accustomed to it; do not feel smug about your own mediocrity; do not scoff at those braver and more passionate than yourself.” In this new year of life, I hope to resist the void through my own story. Strive forward with all my might: indulge not in idle fantasy, chase not empty renown, and cherish with all my heart these years of pursuing dreams!
“The world is so vast, the paths so numerous, yet forced by life, we know not where to begin.” Walking along a one-dimensional street, I look in all four directions, feeling hemmed in with nowhere to gallop. Encounters in a post-romantic era are forever fraught with coarseness and compromise.
A somewhat theatrical, youthful battle-spirit of learning has been awakened once more! Grade 12 has arrived!
The above, for mutual encouragement. Appended are eighteen lines of verse.
Appended: Eighteen · Sword’s Whispers
Hard traveling suddenly brings heavy grief,
Again I mourn where streams diverge and part.
Spraying rocks, the winding brook runs slender;
Chilling winds enter the watchtower fort.
Whose son stands high upon that garrison,
Mournfully grieving beneath the bright moon’s art?
The path is bounded where the dark clouds end;
Winter lingers long with the mountain stream.
At times the falling petals drift along,
Following the flowing waters’ far-off sweet perfume.
In wind-blown woods the crescent moon descends;
With dew-drenched robes, the silent zither plays.
The Longquan sword gleams like frost and snow;
Master artisans marvel at its peerless craft.
Trimming the lamp, I rise to dance with the blade,
Singing wild songs before Master Five Willows.
Where lies my ancient mountain now?
Night after night, heroic spirits soar to the sky!
Note: Portions of these lines adapt allusions and poetic phrases from Du Fu and Guo Zhen.
