I. Li Jinhai’s Christmas Carol
Is Christmas an alluring red apple, or the fierce desire of Adam and Eve? Is Christmas the starlit candle flickers upon cathedral spires, or a magnificent Hallelujah soaring amid organ chords? Is Christmas Khrushchev’s beef stew with potatoes, or Du Fu’s myriad grand mansions sheltering all poor scholars with smiling faces? Is Christmas Beethoven embracing the myriad multitudes, or Bai Juyi’s kindred wanderers at the edge of the world needing no prior acquaintance to meet?
圣诞不是秦始皇的焚书坑儒,也不是希特勒的绞刑架;圣诞不是美国扔向日本的原子弹,也不是日本在南京的大屠杀;圣诞不是拿破仑的滑铁卢,也不是袁世凯的复辟帝制;圣诞不是上帝的生日,也不是犹大的铜板;
Christmas is not the First Emperor of Qin burning books and burying scholars, nor is it Hitler’s gallows; Christmas is not the atomic bombs dropped by America upon Japan, nor is it the Japanese massacre in Nanjing; Christmas is not Napoleon’s Waterloo, nor is it Yuan Shikai’s monarchical restoration; Christmas is not the birthday of God, nor is it Judas’s copper coins;
圣诞是罗密欧与朱丽叶的阳台、梁山伯与祝英台的十八里相送;圣诞是伦勃朗的浪子回头、普希金的一首小诗;圣诞是托尔斯泰的复活、海明威的永别了武器;圣诞是春天的生灵;圣诞是少女的酒靥;圣诞是兄弟间的拥抱是姐妹间的舞蹈;圣诞是人们在自己的恶行面前感到羞愧,给自己回头是岸的机会;圣诞是生命之光的大捷,也是人类文明的休战日;
Christmas is Romeo and Juliet’s balcony, and Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai’s eighteen-li farewell; Christmas is Rembrandt’s return of the prodigal son, and a lyric poem by Pushkin; Christmas is Tolstoy’s Resurrection, and Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms; Christmas is the living creatures of spring; Christmas is the dimple on a maiden’s cheek; Christmas is brothers embracing and sisters dancing; Christmas is mortals feeling shame before their own misdeeds, granting themselves a chance to repent and turn back; Christmas is the grand triumph of the light of life, and the armistice day of human civilization;
When Christmas Eve arrives, people light multicolored candles with devout hearts, draping themselves in the gentle veil of dreams; all sing in unison, their souls stirred by the sincerity welling from within. Gifts are exchanged, every heartfelt greeting touching the other’s heart; every breath is saturated with the fragrance of spring, and strangers are no longer estranged—as if spring has returned to the mortal world. Christmas is a tree, adorned with humanity’s prayers to turn away from evil and embrace goodness.
One day, the Pharisees brought an adulteress before Jesus, declaring she must be stoned to death. Jesus bowed down and said: “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her.” When Jesus lifted his gaze, everyone had departed. The Christmas bells began to ring.
II. Whispers of the Autumn Leaves (Prose Poem)
Autumn is a soft sway amid dappled tree-shadows,
rippling outward, spreading the dying sun red as blood.
Whenever the bleak wind turns mournful,
there is always someone
who sighs as they see off the withered, falling leaves.
眼中含着泪,笑着;
Who would have thought? As it suddenly spirals down from the branch,
its heart is turning too — that tender, reluctant whirl!
It has not forgotten the clear blue sky of early spring,
nor the sun’s warmth in high summer.
With tears in its eyes, it smiles;
all around, an even stillness descends, like a soft, drooping curtain.
The tree murmurs as if in sleep, as though calling out,
the leaves rustle their whispers, waiting in silence,
a faint fragrant devotion spreads through the quiet —
“Oh, I wait quietly for the next season’s blossoms to bloom!”
III. After the Rear-End Collision (Weekly Journal, 2020.12.7)
At this time of year, every second-year high school student is facing the trial of reviewing for the qualification exams while taking classes in nine subjects at once. In those days I was shuttling endlessly between home and school, run ragged by the nine subjects. Every day I cursed under my breath.
And on this particular day, just before I left for school, I had completely cut off contact with my ex-girlfriend. The reason was simple enough: the pressure of high school study and the expectations of my teachers and parents had left me no room to tend to that fragile relationship.
“This is too hard!” Sitting in the car, missing the carefree, romantic days of middle school, I couldn’t help but feel a quiet sorrow.
It was in this state of mind that the collision happened.
It was very sudden — the collision simply happened. As a high schooler who couldn’t even drive, I honestly couldn’t tell you where the fault lay among the four cars involved; what I cared about was what came next. One second my parents were lecturing me about my grades, the next they were out of the car dealing with the dispute, leaving me alone inside.
What could I possibly do?
In that instant, a sense of absurdity washed over me like a wave. Have I, in all my years alive, picked up even the slightest ability to survive in the real world? How did I never notice this before? A string of questions plunged me into thought, and my mind — normally wound tight as a spring — seized up too, as if it had been rear-ended along with the car.
Looking out the window, the adults were defending their own mistakes with fierce arguments. Isn’t it almost funny? Forty-odd years of living, and all you have to show for it is a car, a house, a spouse — and now you’re still haggling over every last cent for their sake. What’s the point?
I looked back again at that once carefree, romantic life. Oh — I realized I was really just longing for those years when I didn’t have to bear any responsibility at all.
Zhang Jiajia once wrote: “Growing up is walking forward in tears, because you have no other choice.” That’s about half right, I think — because once tears blur your eyes, you stop seeing the scenery by the roadside at all. And Fan Wenzheng’s line — “Not moved to joy by external things, not saddened by personal circumstance” — surely wasn’t written for a moment like this?
Still, whatever the case, life goes on — that much we have to accept, whether we like it or not. Romain Rolland put it this way too: “There is only one heroism in the world: to see the truth of life clearly, and still love it.” Besides, I haven’t even truly entered life yet. Besides — I am a student of Suzhong.
“Not moved to joy by external things, not saddened by personal circumstance.” One and a half years remain — my last year and a half of study in Suzhou. Compared with “the decay we are all bound to go through” (Salinger’s phrase), I should count myself lucky that, now that I’ve realized all this, I still have this last year and a half left.
Hold the pen in your hand firmly. When the bell rings, leave nothing to regret.
