December: Behind the Cultural Clamor
2020 Back to Diligent Studies in Guangling
Over recent years, champions of the Chinese Poetry Conference captivated audiences across the nation: all were stirred by Wu Yishu’s brilliance and Lei Haiwei’s triumph against the odds. The Poetry Conference provides an inclusive arena, serving as a vessel for celebrating and disseminating traditional culture while infusing ancient verse with contemporary freshness. Hence, we would do well to step beyond the glittering stage and examine the currents moving behind the culture.
On the show, contestants battling the “Hundred-Member Corps” forms a dramatic highlight. Perhaps to broaden appeal for viewers unversed in classical poetry, no other format would suffice. Yet this reflects the emergence of formalism behind contemporary culture—a blind, mechanical mode of cultural inheritance.
Culture is not an empty formal shell, still less a prize fought over in banter; what we seek is its living soul, not its corpse. We frequently witness waves of the so-called “sinology fever”: someone reads Records of the Grand Historian today, and another discourses on Laozi and Zhuangzi tomorrow. While cloaking traditional learning in popular dress helps reach the public, commercial hype has derailed much of it, exposing mounting pitfalls. Take urban elementary schools adopting “sinology primers” filled with dry, rote commentaries: this is like handing toddlers unpeeled sugarcane and demanding they chew through the rind—an exercise in futility.
The Chinese Poetry Conference ought to serve as a catalyst inspiring the populace to savor and assimilate classical poetic heritage, rather than merely dropping in on lectures to indulge in cultural self-intoxication. Fast-food culture is convenient: belching after a quick meal, one easily commands superficial awe from peers. Consequently, public attention has begun to drift from substance to spectacle.
The core of culture must be cultural pride, an emotional heritage transmitted across thousands of years. The serene composure radiated by Wu Yishu and Lei Haiwei—“Leisurely watching flowers bloom and fade, drifting at ease as clouds unfurl and curl”—springs from profound reverence for cultural roots and quiet accumulation. Only when our hearts harbor this devotion does culture become a living part of existence, radiating authentic allure.
I envision scholars and poets strumming zithers beside bamboo groves and flowing waters, and unyielding statesmen agonizing over the fate of nation and people; the impact of millennia of brilliant culture strikes far deeper than dry tomes. I have no wish to become a bookworm burrowing in yellowed papers, stifled beneath moldy antiquities; nor do I wish to drown in material void, sinking amidst the clamor.
Rather than these extremes, I choose to hold fast to this emotion, becoming a single link in the unbroken cultural chain connecting past and future, wandering freely along the great river of culture—gazing back at the past, and writing the future.
