一 Part I
Slender bamboos and luxuriant woods, the brook babbling soft and clear. Melodious zither notes cascaded down through the gaps between leaves; Ji Kang, the towering hero of this age, lived here in seclusion.
On this day, a handsome, distinguished figure came drawn by his renown: “Is this Master Ji Kang? I am Zhong Shiji (Zhong Hui), youngest son of the Grand Tutor.”
“With what intent do you come?” Ji Kang asked casually, his hands still caressing the strings of his zither.
“I have long heard of your noble renown. If you do not spurn me, I implore you, sir, to take up office and assist me in accomplishing great deeds!”
“Do you not know that Shan Juyuan has already severed ties with me? To transcend the Confucian orthodoxies and follow natural spontaneity is supreme; you had best depart without delay!” Beneath the crisp notes of the zither lingered an awkward silhouette as Zhong Hui departed in silence. In the distance, harmonies rang joyous and melodies stretched lingering—Ji Kang rested his hands upon the strings and sighed.
二 Part II
High in the imperial hall, Zhong Hui said to Sima Zhao: “Ji Kang presumes upon his talent to disdain the sovereign, beguiling the hearts of the realm; he deserves to be beheaded!”
Hearing this, students of the Imperial Academy clamored in protest: “Master Ji Kang is a luminary of our age; wed to the Lady of Changle, he stands peerless and far above the herd with profound scholarship—he must not be slain!” “The Master’s rendition of the Guangling San is a swan song for all eternity; he is an outstanding gentleman of our dynasty, and executing him would wound the hearts of literati across the realm!”
Sima Zhao pondered at length: “This Ji Kang is a fellow whose fame outstrips his substance; moreover, unwilling to serve our dynasty, he has repeatedly insulted my envoys. As a son-in-law of the Cao Wei royal family who refuses to submit as a minister, he must be beheaded!”
The imperial scholars were stricken with dismay and rushed to inform Ji Kang. Ji Kang smiled and said: “Do you know why Yuan Xiaoni wished to learn the Guangling San from me in the past, yet I steadfastly refused to impart it? Music is the melody of human life; none of you can cast your gaze far enough to entrust your true soul to the strings, harmonizing with heaven and earth. In your hands, this melody would lose its purity; in the hands of the Sima clan, my life loses benevolence. The hour grows late; come, all of you, play a tune!” Beneath the zither melodies of three thousand scholars, flowing waters echoed in the void, and lofty mountains plucked at the heart. Ji Kang smiled faintly—a smile of relief, or perhaps of sorrow.
三 Part III
The next morning, a chilling dawn, Ji Kang stepped toward the execution ground accompanied by his cherished scorched-tail zither. Lining the way stood three thousand silent scholars, while upon the execution terrace waited the cold, sinister Sima Zhao and the triumphant Zhong Hui. Zhong Hui laughed aloud: “Old rogue Ji Kang, have you any final words now!” Ji Kang remained silent. He glanced toward his old friends Wang Rong and Shan Tao standing beside Sima Zhao, untied the scorched-tail zither from his back, his flowing robes and slender sash fluttering in the breeze.
Fingers hooked slightly, striking the opening tone; melodious music drifted forth. Recalling bygone days of wild drinking in the Bamboo Grove, the Seven Sages were no longer as of old. Caressing the strings, with effortless grace he played a tune of lofty peaks and surging rivers, a lone soul flowing gentle as a slender stream.
The zither notes intertwined, rising ever more impassioned; fingers moved back and forth, tugging at the heartstrings, lingering overtones humming low and revolving in mournful cadence. It seemed to pose anew the question to Zhong Hui: “What did you hear to come, what did you see to depart?”
The zither music turned somber, fading gradually into whispers, like a plaintive sigh, like tears and longing. Let him forever lead a life of singing aloud at Ye, drinking deep in the Bamboo Grove, floating wine cups along winding streams, and plucking chrysanthemums in the southern garden; let not the foul vapors of the mundane world smother the faint, delicate fragrance of the chrysanthemum.
The melody drew toward its close; the final notes fell, each lighter than the last, yet each firmer than before. Ji Kang sighed softly: “When the tune ends and the crowd disperses, all is a dream; when splendor withers away, everything turns to emptiness!” The setting sun was red as blood; the executioner’s blade descended; the song ended and the throng scattered, leaving behind only lingering vibrations in the void. Death arrived, yet it heralded transcendence; at this moment, death congealed into eternity. A thousand years later, vanishing alongside the musical score of Guangling San was that proud, unbending spirit and the transcendent integrity of the Wei-Jin era.
Once Guangling is lost, an eternal swan song ends!
Whose eyes are those, brimming with tears of grief and fury gazing toward heaven, in the piercing chill of winter?
