Cai Sang Zi: Time Knows Only How to Urge People to Age
Song Dynasty · Yan Shu
Time knows only how to urge mortals to grow old, giving no credence to tender passion; forever lamenting the farewell pavilion, tears soak the spring robe, yet wine is too easily dispelled.
Past night the west wind blew fierce through the paulownia trees; the faint moon hung hazy and dim, sweet dreams repeatedly shattered—from what high tower does the single cry of a wild goose arise?

I once read in a book: Chinese literati, chirping like birds seeking friends throughout the wider world, remarked that they found the truest affinity with French men of letters—intimate, uninhibited, and bonded by refinement and elegance. André Gide and Paul Valéry both counted Chinese friends among their circles back then, living in profound harmony, presenting books and exchanging correspondence after parting. Reading this moved me deeply: perhaps every scholar, at heart, forever yearns for a kindred soul who truly understands their writings, so as to bring solace to their soul.

Nature is an encyclopedia, and the myriad individuals in society form a living Bizarre Happenings Eyewitnessed over Two Decades. This world has gifted me countless volumes, using the surging waves of life to pan away the sand and preserve the gold, discarding the weeds and retaining the good grain. In my view, I ought likewise to exchange correspondence with this world and gift her a book of my own—and herein lies the origin of this volume’s title.

On Monday morning, people rushing hurriedly on their commute to work seem as though they are striving in unison to fabricate a wondrous and rational world. Yet all those hurrying commuters are devoid of independent convictions. Even if a few possess an opinion of their own, unable to put it into practice, it amounts to having none at all. Those serving someone else’s conviction are merely hired hands paying the price with their labor. And what of the one who actually executes that conviction? In most cases, an unscrupulous egoist. Rushing incessantly through a utilitarian world, they have no time to slacken their pace. Amidst their nominal freedom, the true realm of freedom refuses to arrive; thus they spin endlessly within the mortal coil, unable to find a way out. And I refuse to be such a person!

Walk slowly, and admire! Take in all the scenery along the path, allowing a distinct luster to emerge through the accumulation of the years!

Yet gold has existed since ancient antiquity, while gold jewelry is constantly renovated in pattern, a common sight. Taking shortcuts to win renown is the lifelong pursuit of artists.

In the mid-nineteenth century, driven by the clamor of public opinion, trampled by the rivalry of peers, artists consumed their own vitality in torment, resorting to artifice and deceit: give me novelty, or give me death. Yet most of their creations can only languish in the basement corners of museums, weeping at their own shadows. Conversely, the masters of the Renaissance created art to express genuine human sentiment, commanding the world’s reverence to this day. The ethos of utilitarian impatience is spreading across the globe, yet I have no wish to turn my works into sacrificial lambs awaiting the highest bidder; instead, I wish to fashion these fortuitous gold nuggets into a signpost naturally wrought, glistening throughout my life to illuminate the road ahead.

Indeed, “gold nuggets” signifies that which is fortuitously captured by an inspired hand.

In the distance, the trees and grasses are green with such uninhibited abandon; spring has never been willing to concede defeat.
