Lee Sedol is, in my mind, the person who comes closest to embodying the true meaning of a “competitor.” If the Go world had idols, Lee Sedol would be mine.

He is the lone eagle circling above Bigeum Island! Through his own efforts, he pushed forward the reform of the professional ranking system, jumping directly from 3-dan to 9-dan! In 2013, for the freedom to compete in China’s A-League, he dared to break with the Korea Baduk Association. He possesses a fearsome style of play: the “zombie style.” It profoundly influenced an entire generation. When I learned Go, zombie-style play was everywhere.

In the 2002 Fujitsu Cup, Lee Sedol burst onto the international stage. Behind his sharp gaze lay a style equally sharp—fast, precise, and ruthless—opening a new era. In 2006, he brought Lee Chang-ho’s decade-long period of dominance to an end, then began a terrifying seven-year reign of his own. His mutual admiration and rivalry with Gu Li became one of the great stories of the Go world… Then, in 2016, AlphaGo arrived. When AlphaGo went 3–0 up, Lee Sedol appeared dejected in front of the cameras. His suit, wrinkled from being pulled and worn, looked like the darkened feathers of an aging eagle that had lost their former brilliance. I knew then that an era bearing the name of Lee Sedol was coming to an end.

Today, Chinese players such as Ke Jie may possess extraordinary technical strength, but somehow I feel they lack something of Lee Sedol’s reverence for Go and his craftsmanlike spirit. The passing of “Big Fan” forces us to reflect upon our deeper understanding of Go. “Go is an art.” That is one of Lee Sedol’s famous sayings, and I offer it to all of you on Zhihu as well.
