初识《平凡的世界》，还是偶然在书店的书架上发现的，它正静静地立着，不加绚丽的修饰，用它深邃的目光凝视着过往，正如它的书名一般，不争不抢，岁月静好。过隙之白驹，倏忽之人生，策马奔腾驰骋向前之时，收缰勒马而回首过往，这本书不轻不重地在我脑中留下了浓墨重彩的一笔：一群普通的人，演绎着悲壮的人生。每一个平凡的人的背后都有一个不为人知的不平凡的世界，每个平静的人生背后都有着激情澎湃。
My first encounter with Ordinary World came by chance when I saw it on a bookstore shelf. It stood there quietly, without extravagant decoration, gazing deeply at those who passed by, just like its title—uncompetitive, unhurried, at peace with the passing years. Time flashes past like a white colt glimpsed through a crack; life itself passes in an instant. As we gallop forward through life, there are moments when we rein in our horses and look back. This book, neither too heavily nor too lightly, left a vivid stroke in my memory: a group of ordinary people performing tragic and heroic lives. Behind every ordinary person lies an extraordinary world unknown to others; behind every calm life, passions surge.
《平凡的世界》以孙少安和孙少平两兄弟为中心，讲述了上世纪七五年到八五年间，在广袤的黄土高原上，一个叫双水村的小地方的人事变迁，并通过复杂的矛盾纠葛，刻画出那些默默承受着人生苦难的平凡的人们的形象。他们在平凡的生活中，勇于突破自身的窠臼，取得生活的成功，谱写出一曲生命之歌，向人们揭示了人生的挫折与奋斗、痛苦与欢乐，并以一幕幕催人泪下的苦难凸显出人物的顽强坚韧的信念。
Ordinary World centers on the brothers Sun Shao’an and Sun Shaoping. It tells of the changes in people and events in a small place called Shuangshui Village on the vast Loess Plateau between 1975 and 1985. Through a complex web of conflicts, it portrays ordinary people silently enduring the suffering of life. Within their ordinary lives, they courageously break through the confines of their circumstances, achieve success in living, and compose a song of life. The story reveals the setbacks and struggles, pain and happiness of human existence, while scene after heartbreaking scene of suffering highlights the characters’ tenacious and resilient beliefs.
也许，在整个社会的壮阔江河中，一个人的汗水溅不起多大的水花，但在那个艰苦的岁月，正是他们的执着和拼搏，为这个社会带来了洪水滔天，把这个社会的陈腐之气洗刷一空。
Perhaps, in the mighty river of society, the sweat of a single person cannot create much of a splash. Yet in those difficult years, it was precisely the persistence and struggle of people like them that brought a great flood upon society, washing away its stagnant and decaying air.
孙少平是这本书中我感触最深的人物，也是这本小说塑造的最成功的一个人物。他有思想，有追求。他没有将自己的生命像大多数与他有着同样条件的青年一样，定格在农村。在读书时，他就立志要做一个不平庸的人，虽然家里最穷，却仍赢得了同学们的尊敬。高中毕业后，因为家境贫寒，他放弃了考大学的机会，毅然外出闯荡，他放下了读书人的架子，去做最底层的工作。但他即使在那般艰难的境地里，仍然不放弃读书的机会。他会在做完一天繁重的体力劳动之后坚持用读书来充实自己。
Sun Shaoping is the character who affected me most deeply in the book and, in my view, the most successfully portrayed character in the novel. He has ideas and aspirations. Unlike most young people born into circumstances similar to his own, he refuses to fix his life permanently in the countryside. Even as a student, he resolves not to become mediocre. Although his family is the poorest, he still earns the respect of his classmates. After graduating from high school, poverty prevents him from attending university, so he resolutely leaves home to make his way in the world. He lets go of the pride of an educated man and takes the lowest-level jobs available. Yet even under those difficult circumstances, he never gives up the opportunity to read. After an entire day of exhausting physical labor, he still insists on enriching himself through books.
孙少平对苦难有着主动选择和迎接挑战的勇气，他甚至能够将对苦难的体验升华到人生哲学的境界：“是的，他是在社会的最底层挣扎，为了几个钱受尽折磨，但他不仅仅将此看做是谋生活命——职业的高低贵贱，不能说明一个人生活的价值，恰恰相反，他现在倒很‘热爱’自己的苦难。”也正因为如此，他才能在那样苦难的日子里，总是保持着那一颗上进的心。正是孙少平在巨大的苦难中表现出的人格尊严和道德激情，以及面对困难的从容淡定和自得其乐，才使得这个人物显得熠熠生辉。
Sun Shaoping has the courage not merely to endure suffering but actively to choose hardship and confront challenges. He can even elevate the experience of suffering into a philosophy of life: “Yes, he was struggling at the very bottom of society, enduring endless torment for a few coins. But he did not regard all this merely as a means of making a living—the social status of an occupation cannot determine the value of a person’s life. On the contrary, he had now come almost to ‘love’ his suffering.” It is precisely because of this attitude that he can preserve an ambitious and upward-looking heart even during such painful days. Sun Shaoping’s personal dignity and moral passion amid tremendous suffering, as well as the calmness and self-contentment with which he confronts difficulty, are what make his character shine so brightly.
随着出身大县城、敢爱敢恨、见多识广的田晓霞慢慢走近他的世界，他的视野逐渐开阔，少平不甘心在家务农而独自来到异地的煤矿当矿工，同时和田晓霞的关系也进一步发展。工作、感情生活不断地锻造着他，凭自己努力成为矿工组长的少平在晓霞意外死亡后经历了巨大的打击。最后他拒绝了脱离苦难的矿工生活、拒绝了留在县城的机会，毅然回到了矿区，来到惠英身边，完成了平凡向伟大的蜕变。
As Tian Xiaoxia—a young woman from the county seat who is bold in love and hatred and has broad experience of the world—gradually enters his life, Shaoping’s horizons expand. Unwilling to remain at home farming, he leaves for a distant coal mine to work as a miner, while his relationship with Tian Xiaoxia also develops further. His work and emotional life continually temper him. Through his own efforts, Shaoping becomes a mining-team leader, but Xiaoxia’s unexpected death deals him a tremendous blow. In the end, he refuses the opportunity to escape the hardship of mining life and rejects the chance to remain in the county town. He resolutely returns to the mining district and to Huiying, completing his transformation from the ordinary to the great.
从孙少平的身上，我懂得了奋斗更多的是一种精神上的执着，一种在黑夜里呼唤黎明、甚至明知不可为而为之的勇气和执着。他的那种勤劳，那种热情总是会传染到我，让我学会高昂地活着，让我懂得，要在平凡中实现自己的不平凡。他平凡，却又伟大。
From Sun Shaoping, I came to understand that struggle is above all a kind of spiritual persistence: the courage and tenacity to call for dawn in the darkness, even to act despite knowing that success may be impossible. His diligence and passion continually affect me. They teach me to live with my head held high and help me understand that we must realize our own extraordinariness within ordinary life. He is ordinary, yet he is great.
平凡，是生活的本色。平凡的世界，就是真实的世界，现实的世界。生活在这个世界中，我们会经历失败，会经历痛苦，会经历生老病死。我们可以贫穷，我们可以地位卑微，但我们不能没有追求，没有精神。不要怕面对苦难，人生中的酸甜苦辣，都是我们存在的意义。
Ordinariness is the true character of life. An ordinary world is the real world, the world in which we actually live. In this world we experience failure, pain, birth, aging, illness, and death. We may be poor. Our social position may be humble. But we cannot live without aspirations or without spirit. Do not fear suffering. The sweetness, bitterness, sourness, and pain of life are all part of the meaning of our existence.
“火把虽然下垂，火舌却一直向上燃烧”，不管生活怎样，我们都要以乐观的心态，以坚强的意志来面对，艰苦奋斗，永不言弃。我们要坚信：苦难与挫折只是个躯壳，真正广阔的生活意义在于我们对生活理想所持的生生不息的虔诚与热情中所体现的坚强的信念。请相信，只要一颗热爱生活的赤忱之心，在亘古的大地与苍凉的宇宙间，总会有一种平凡的声音，荡气回肠。
“Though a torch points downward, its flame always burns upward.” No matter what life brings, we must face it with optimism and a strong will, work hard, and never give up. We must believe that suffering and setbacks are only an outer shell. The truly expansive meaning of life lies in the firm conviction embodied by our ceaseless devotion and passion for our ideals. Believe that as long as one possesses a sincere heart that loves life, somewhere between the ancient earth and the desolate universe there will always be an ordinary voice capable of reverberating through the soul.
