2016-2019 The Solitary Star of Tianshui 2016–2019 第 01 篇 Section 01
Preface: Xinggu’s Moon
2016-2019 Back to The Solitary Star of Tianshui 2016–2019我家附近公园中有座小山,我常在夏夜登上去,城市的噪音变成了城市的低语。
There is a small hill in a park near my home. On summer nights, I often climb to the top, where the noise of the city fades into a distant murmur. Under the moonlight, the hillside seems woven from silk and cast in silver; amid the silence, I share in the soft calls of night birds and the joy of summer insects.
From this little hill, I have watched the moon rise many times: the shy and hazy moon of spring, the summer moon seemingly steaming up from the earth, the enormous and self-assured autumn moon, and the pale winter moon, serene and solitary. Every moonrise is like beautiful music, first stirring the strings of my heart and then soothing my soul.
What is sad is that, as technology continually broadens our field of vision, it also increasingly confines the world in which we actually move. People who live with their heads bowed occasionally look up at the sky and remark, “The moon is so bright tonight!” Then they lower their heads and continue on their way. To those who merely glance at it absent-mindedly, the moon responds only with composure; but to those who truly gaze at it, the moon has gifts to bestow.
I came to understand the moon’s gift around midnight shortly before the Chinese New Year. We were hurrying home when my father’s tire was punctured by a nail, leaving us awkwardly stranded on a country road. Our whole family was trapped beneath the moonlight. I took the opportunity to gaze for a long time into that tranquil, deep-blue moonlit world. Only when people patiently contemplate the moon will the moon patiently share with them the stories of the past. That night, I heard the helpless sighs of poets, the cries of soldiers on the frontier, the hesitation of women from the water towns… Across the ages, wherever you may be and whatever circumstances you may find yourself in, we all share this same watery moonlight.
To appreciate that moonlight is to discover an unusual tranquility within ourselves. Gradually, we become aware of the vastness of heaven and earth, the boundlessness of the universe, and the extraordinary privilege we possess of sharing this light with all those who have lived before us.
When I returned to the car, I continued peacefully on my journey, my shoulders bathed in moonlight.
From then on, I often returned to the moon’s side. Whenever I felt lost or melancholy, whenever the pressure of study made it hard for me to breathe, I felt its attraction all the more strongly. Thinking of Shakespeare’s words—“How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank! Here will we sit and let the sounds of music creep in our ears”—I cannot help but smile with relief. This is a melody composed by moonlight for the stillness of the night.
Better to descend the hill quietly, so as not to disturb the mountain’s sleep or the shared silence of all living things. Leave the moonlight to those who need it more. A trace of gentle ease will remain in your hands, while the moonlight, flowing like water, washes the dust from your heart.
