I. The Psychology of Mulholland Drive

  2. Repression: This mechanism refers to an individual, without realizing it, “consciously” excluding experiences and impulses that the self finds unacceptable, threatening, or painful from conscious awareness and suppressing them into the unconscious. The quotation marks preserve the contradiction in the Chinese source.

  4. Denial: Denial involves escaping psychological pain by distorting one’s thoughts, emotions, or perceptions in a traumatic situation, or by “denying” an unpleasant event and behaving as though it never happened, thereby obtaining temporary psychological relief.

  6. Regression: When a person encounters frustration that they are unable to cope with, they may abandon previously acquired mature attitudes and behavioral patterns and revert to more immature ways of satisfying their desires.

  8. Reaction Formation: When an individual has desires or motives that are unacceptable either to their own conscious mind or to society, they may fear acting upon them, repress them into the unconscious, and instead display outward behaviors that are the exact opposite of those underlying impulses. This is known as reaction formation.

  10. Rationalization: When an individual fails to achieve a desired goal, or when their behavior does not conform to social norms, they may search for reasons that satisfy their own psychological needs and use them to provide a seemingly reasonable explanation for their actions. This helps conceal their mistakes, reduce anxiety, and protect their self-esteem from injury. In other words, rationalization means constructing a “reasonable” explanation to disguise or soften a psychological wound.

  12. Sour Grapes: When a person is unable to obtain something they desire because of their own limitations, they respond by belittling or devaluing it.

  14. Sweet Lemon: The opposite of the sour-grapes mechanism is the “sweet lemon” defense. It refers to attempting to convince oneself and others that what one has achieved or already possesses is, in fact, the best possible choice.

  16. Blame-Shifting: This defense mechanism involves attributing one’s shortcomings or failures to other causes, finding someone or something else to bear responsibility for one’s mistakes, and thereby preserving one’s inner peace.

  18. Ritual and Undoing: Whether a mistake is committed consciously or unconsciously, people feel uneasy afterward—especially when their actions have harmed innocent others or caused them losses. Feelings of guilt and self-reproach may become intense. When a person attempts to symbolically “cancel out” an unpleasant event that has already occurred through particular acts or rituals in order to reduce feelings of guilt, this mechanism is called ritual and undoing.

  20. Isolation: “Isolation” refers to separating certain aspects of a fact or experience from conscious awareness so that they do not produce psychological discomfort. What is most commonly isolated is the personal emotional response associated with the event, because such feelings are especially likely to provoke anxiety and distress.

  22. Idealization: In the process of idealization, a person tends to assign an excessively positive evaluation to certain people, events, or objects. Such overvaluation can easily distort and beautify reality to the point that one’s perception becomes detached from the facts.

  24. Splitting: Some people frequently display contradictory or poorly integrated patterns of behavior in everyday life. At the same time, they may exhibit sharply opposed behaviors in different environments or areas of life. From a psychoanalytic perspective, this is described as splitting consciousness into two and employing the defense mechanism known as splitting.

  26. Displacement: Displacement occurs when emotions, desires, or attitudes originally directed toward a particular object cannot be expressed directly toward that object—for example, because doing so would violate social norms, create danger, or be unacceptable to the conscious self. These impulses are instead redirected toward a safer and more socially acceptable target, thereby reducing psychological anxiety.

  28. Fantasy: When a person is unable to deal with difficulties in real life, or cannot tolerate certain emotional disturbances, they may temporarily withdraw from reality and enter a world of fantasy, where they can obtain inner peace and experience forms of satisfaction that are unavailable to them in real life. This is called fantasy.

  30. Compensation: When an individual is unable to achieve a goal because of a physical or psychological deficiency, they may attempt to make up for that deficiency through other means in order to reduce anxiety and rebuild self-esteem. This is known as compensation. Compensation is divided into positive and negative forms.

  32. Identification: “Identification” refers to identifying oneself with people of higher status or greater achievement in order to relieve the anxiety produced by one’s own inability to attain success or satisfaction in real life.

  34. Sublimation: Sublimation occurs when instinctual drives—such as hunger, sexual desire, or aggression—are redirected into activities or domains that are acceptable to oneself or to society.

II. What Is High-Quality Singlehood?

Radical independence and self-reliance; dependence on no one:
They are entirely self-sufficient. Their finances, emotional well-being, and life plans are all under their own control. They neither cling to others nor seek to please them, and they never place responsibility for their happiness in someone else’s hands. Partners and friends are additions to an already fulfilling life, not necessities.

Strong self-discipline and constant self-improvement:
They have their own rhythm every day: exercising, reading, studying, and pursuing personal goals. They invest their time in becoming stronger and more capable rather than endlessly scrolling through social media or getting caught up in meaningless social obligations.

Rationality, composure, and emotional control—the Stoic core:
Influenced by Stoicism, they practice the principle of “control what you can control, and accept what you cannot.” They do not collapse in the face of setbacks. Instead, they treat obstacles as opportunities for growth and preserve their inner calm. Emotional stability is their greatest source of attractiveness.

No pursuit of external validation; adherence to personal principles:
They do not care what others think and do not follow trends, and do not seek attention simply to prove their existence. They use social media sparingly, or perhaps not at all. They maintain strong personal boundaries and standards and refuse to compromise them or “perform” for the approval of others.

Enjoyment of solitude; reserved and somewhat aloof:
Solitude is how they recharge, not a synonym for loneliness. They do not speak much, but when they do, they get directly to the point. Their appeal comes from mystery and depth rather than noise or constant social activity.

Loyalty with firm boundaries; no involvement in drama:
They are intensely loyal to people whom they truly allow into their world, but they will not tolerate lies, betrayal, or low-quality relationships. They dislike gossip, jealousy, and pointless emotional entanglements, and they are willing to cut unhealthy relationships off directly.

Willingness to take risks, challenge authority, and live authentically:
They are not afraid to break conventions or question social norms. They do what they genuinely want to do, wear what they want to wear, and move through life at their own pace. Their confidence may even be somewhat intimidating, yet it is precisely this quality that makes them highly attractive.

High standards and an unwillingness to settle:
Whether in career, friendship, or romance, they choose only high-quality options. They would rather have nothing than settle for something inferior, and they will never lower their standards simply because they are “afraid of being single” or worried about “what other people will say.”

III. Ding Junhui’s Psychological Issues

(Learned Helplessness):

Learned Helplessness: After repeatedly entering smaller tournaments over a long period only to suffer one defeat after another, Ding developed the psychological belief that “no matter how hard I work or how much I practice, the outcome will not change.” This led him to make the seemingly “rational” choice to stop struggling—to enter fewer tournaments, reduce his training, and adopt a fatalistic, “whatever happens, happens” mentality.

(Self-Handicapping):

Self-Handicapping: This is a mechanism for protecting one’s self-esteem. By “not trying hard” or “not training systematically,” Ding preserves an explanation for failure in advance: “I lost because I didn’t practice. If I had trained seriously, I would definitely have been capable of winning.” If he were truly to commit himself completely and make an all-out effort, only to fail anyway, he would then be forced to confront the harsh reality that he was indeed no longer capable.

Being ‘Beyond Criticism’ Because of the Premium Attached to His Status: As the undisputed leading figure of Chinese snooker and the head of his own team, Ding’s status makes the people around him afraid to offer constructive criticism or impose demanding training requirements. In the absence of external constraints, he can rely only on internal drive, which has steadily diluted with age.

Extreme Introversion and Intense Self-Esteem: Ding’s personality carries an innate irritability and defensiveness. Looking back at history (such as the ‘Wattana incident’ or his delicate collaboration with Terry Griffiths), Ding exhibits an intense aversion to outside intervention and criticism. He is accustomed to “pushing through relying only on himself,” yet upon entering middle age, he faces the physical and psychological exhaustion of “blunted steel.”
