Confucius said: “At seventy, I could follow what my heart desired without transgressing what was right”—this is a realm of transcendent wisdom. Doing good deeds within one’s power while respecting the rules brings touching warmth; yet if fundamental principles are breached, it inevitably disheartens the public.

As everyone knows, a public library has the duty to open its doors to the public, while the public has the reciprocal obligation not to disturb other readers. A foul-smelling vagrant, much like a patron shouting aloud or munching snacks, is equally unsuited to the environment of a library.

In fact, if one reflects from their perspective, it becomes evident: what vagrants need is not an upscale sanctuary for reading, but a comfortable resting room, a place of shelter—and a free, air-conditioned library serves as their default haven. When the library director resolved to accept homeless people, his comprehension of the institution’s core purpose became problematic.

Taking a step back, even granting that some vagrants indeed arrive with the genuine intent to read, they still ought not to enter emitting repulsive odors. Since the library confers upon them the right to read, they should at bare minimum present themselves in clean attire to show high reverence for fellow patrons and for reading itself. Immanuel Kant once observed: “Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me.” Such is the supreme value of the moral law. Those vagrants truly intent on reading would surely comprehend this.

Should we, then, ignore or harbor hostility toward vagrants? Certainly not: in the vast expanse of Hangzhou, they have not a foothold to call their own; they are the demographic in this city that warrants the greatest compassionate attention. From this incident, one can see mutual care gradually warming among the public. Perhaps we could dispense with squabbles between library administration and readers, and instead join together in creating a superior reading environment, which benefits every soul dwelling in Hangzhou.

It must be acknowledged that while I cannot fully concur with Hangzhou Library’s policy, it represents a substantial step forward in societal care for vagrants. Our compatriots have for too long neglected mutual civic care: “No Smoking” signs are routinely disregarded; “Chinese-style” jaywalking persists unabated. People seem to have forgotten these effortless courtesies, flouting civic virtue for personal whim; when everyday public duties are ignored, the vagrants in city alleys receive even less notice. Hence, compassion must have its rightful place: rather than spending energy criticizing what feels disheartening, it is far better to propose establishing shelters that vagrants urgently need.

Wherever human beings gather, warmth abounds; may warmth bestow upon every person a gracious temperature of goodwill.
